The latest in the “Will they or won’t they (play each other)” for the University of Texas and Notre Dame took a positive spin on earlier this week.
According to Pete Sampson of The Athletic, Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua offered a vote of confidence in the school’s future football series with Texas, saying he believes the games will be played as scheduled. Bevacqua claims he and Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte speak frequently and both intend to have the series move forward.
The series is set to start in South Bend in 2028 and in Austin in 2029, but there has been some uncertainty about whether it would happen in the modern collegiate landscape.
When Del Conte told Brett McMurphy of On3 that the two games were “tentatively” on the schedule for both teams, it made people question whether it was going to happen. When Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian was asked, he responded with “I don’t know about Notre Dame. We’ll see,” putting more doubt on it happening.
If the series remains intact, it will bring together two giants in college football on one field. The two teams have not played since 2016, a game that the Longhorns won. Notre Dame owns the overall advantage, winning 9 out of 12 games historically.
