Part of southbound Interstate 75 in Detroit has been closed due to a crash early Tuesday caused by a wrong-way driver, officials said.
Dispatchers received calls about a wrong-way driver on southbound I-75 near Dearborn Street on the city’s southwest side at about 4 a.m., the Michigan State Police said on X.
Minutes later, police received additional calls reporting a two-vehicle crash and vehicle fire on southbound I-75 near Rosa Parks Boulevard, MSP said.
Troopers arrived at the scene and found that one of the vehicles involved in the crash appeared to be the wrong-way driver’s vehicle, according to authorities.
Police said the crash is under investigation and they are working to determine the extent of injuries of those involved.
Meanwhile, all lanes of southbound I-75 are closed from Grand River to Rosa Parks Boulevard, officials said. Traffic is being diverted off the freeway at Grand River, and motorists are encouraged to avoid the area.
The incident is among the latest in Michigan involving a wrong-way driver.
Last week, a St. Clair County man accused of carjacking, home invasion, fleeing police, and driving the wrong way on a freeway last year was ordered to stand trial.
Earlier this month, a wrong-way driver died after crashing into another vehicle in Redford Township.
Last month, three people were hospitalized after a vehicle crash on I-375 involving a drunk driver who was going northbound in the freeway’s southbound lanes.
