At a time when public health leadership is often caught between politics, science, and growing public skepticism, the St. Clair County Board of Commissioners made a notable statement on June 18, 2026. By pausing its regular business to recognize Medical Director Dr. Remington Nevin with a formal legislative proclamation, county and state leaders signaled more than appreciation—they signaled alignment with a particular vision of public health.

Presented by State Representative Joseph Pavlov and signed by Representatives Jamie Greene and Jay DeBoyer, the proclamation praised Dr. Nevin for “advocating for the freedoms and liberties of all residents.” That language reflects a broader shift in how public health is being approached locally—one that places a strong emphasis on personal liberty alongside traditional public health priorities.

Dr. Nevin is not a typical county health official. A Johns Hopkins–trained physician and former U.S. Army preventive medicine officer, he brings a diverse and unconventional background to the role. His work has included research on the long-term effects of antimalarial drugs and testimony before government bodies—experience that has shaped his willingness to challenge established thinking.

Since becoming Medical Director in 2023, Dr. Nevin has drawn both strong support and pointed criticism. Supporters credit him with promoting transparency, informed consent, and individual choice, particularly in areas such as vaccine exemptions and environmental health. Critics, however, argue that his positions on renewable energy infrastructure, fluoridation, vaccine policy, and public health services have deepened divisions within the community.

Those divisions were evident even during the June 18 meeting, where reactions ranged from applause to visible skepticism. It was a reminder that public trust in health leadership is not automatic, it must be continually earned.

The roots of this moment trace back to 2022, when county commissioners restructured the Health Department following disputes over COVID-19 restrictions. By separating the roles of Health Officer and Medical Director after the departure of Dr. Annette Mercatante-Gilmer, officials sought to respond to public concern and redefine how authority is exercised in local public health.

That decision opened the door for a leader like Dr. Nevin—one whose approach resonates with residents seeking a different balance between government authority and personal freedom.

While proclamations are often ceremonial, this one carries deeper meaning. It represents a clear endorsement not only of Dr. Nevin’s service, but also of the philosophy he represents. St. Clair County is, in many ways, becoming a reflection of a broader national conversation about how best to balance science, public input, and individual liberty in shaping public health policy.

Regardless of where one stands on these issues, thoughtful leadership and civic engagement remain essential—and for that, our community is better served.
