Some areas of southeast Michigan may face damaging winds and large hail as a storm system moves though the region Tuesday night, weather forecasters said, warning that Wednesday could bring even more severe conditions.
The National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook for 17 counties in Michigan. The greatest chance for severe weather is from 3-9 p.m.
Most of Lower Michigan is consider at marginal risk for severe thunderstorms, with a portion of south-central and southwest Michigan at slightly higher risk, NWS said.
Additional storms are expected Wednesday evening, especially in areas south of Metro Detroit and across the entire southern tier of Lower Michigan. Winds could reach 65 mph and there is a chance of localized flash flooding and an isolated tornado.
Earlier Tuesday, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail prompted the National Weather Service to issue a warning for northern Oakland County, though 2 p.m.
The agency received reports of 1-inch hailstones from the Highland Township and Franklin areas.
