Increasingly humid air in Michigan in a week that is expected to be a scorcher will stir up thunderstorms statewide this week, some of which could become severe.
Thunderstorms are forecast to develop on and off from Monday night, June 8, through Thursday, June 11, across Michigan with the strongest conditions expected on Wednesday, June 10, according to the Storm Prediction Center maintained by the National Weather Service.
“Multiple rounds of scattered showers and storms are expected across the area beginning late tonight and lasting into Tuesday evening (June 9),” Gaylord NWS said on social media on June 8. “Very warm and increasingly humid weather is in store through the middle of this week with highs well into the 80s and possibly even the low 90s.”
Air temperatures will be hot for most of the work week. Detroit is forecast to see highs of 94 degrees on Wednesday, June 10, and Thursday, June 11.
Statewide, temperatures mainly range in the 70s-80s, though on Wednesday, June 10, and Thursday, June 11, temperatures will spike into the 90s. The combination of heat and humidity may make temperatures feel hotter than they are according to the heat index — a measurement of what temperatures “feel like” to the human body.
Officials urge residents to prepare for the heat by reducing outdoor activity as much as possible, staying hydrated and wearing lightweight clothing to prevent heat-related illnesses.
