June’s recruiting battles have only just begun, but the state of Illinois remains one of Michigan State’s most successful fronts.
A day after linebacker Matthew Brady (Bloomington, Illinois) announced his commitment to the Spartans’ 2027 recruiting class, Nazareth Academy athlete Henry Sakalas made his own commitment official Thursday with a post on X (formerly Twitter).
The pair of Illinois prospects are both three-stars according to 247Sports. Sakalas — who plays safety in the high school ranks but will be a linebacker in college under primary recruiter and linebackers coach Max Bullough — ranks 101st at the position nationally; Brady ranks 124th.
Michigan State defensive coordinator Joe Rossi appeared quite thrilled with the commitments, quote-tweeting recruiting GIFs posted by head coach Pat Fitzgerald on Tuesday with the numbers “1” and “2.” When Sakalas finally announced his commitment, Rossi posted those numbers and a raised fist.
Four days into June, Michigan State is up to nine commits in its 2027 class. All of those prospects are three-stars, though two — offensive tackle Jack Carlson (Brighton) and Ohimai Ozolua (Chicago) are fringe four-stars. The bulk of the group comes from Big Ten country. Three commits are from Illinois, three are from Ohio, two are from Michigan and one is from New Jersey.
While recruiting season has hardly rounded its first turn on the race track, Michigan State ranks 41st in the nation according to 247Sports and 14th in the Big Ten.
Holt athlete a late add to Michigan State roster
A local kid will get a chance to compete with the Spartans this fall. Ethan Melville, an athlete who played quarterback for Holt this past fall, announced his commitment flip from Division III Calvin to Michigan State on Thursday.
Melville is a priority walk-on, and he’ll play tight end despite all his time under center in high school where he threw 58-for-111 with 881 yards and seven touchdowns for Holt. At 6-foot-4 and 215 pounds, according to his X profile, Melville brings a big body to the roster and fills in some roster depth.
