It’s time to vote for the Detroit Free Press Buffalo Wild Wings Girls Prep Athlete of the Week.
This week’s poll features four players – two from softball and one each from soccer and track and field – who had standout performances during the week of May 24-30.
Voting will close at noon on Friday, June 5.
Here are the nominees (listed in alphabetical order by last name):
Harper Barnhart, Woodhaven, soccer
Woodhaven shut out both of its opponents last week to advance to the regional semifinals. Barnhart scored six goals and had one assist across both games; she also set two new school records: single-season assists (25) and single-season goals (42).
Malise Brown, Detroit Cass Tech, track and field
Brown won the girls 200m state championship during the MHSAA Division 1 track and field state finals on Saturday, May 30. The senior finished the event with a time of 23:13, the second-fastest finish in the event in state history and sixth-fastest in the country.
Taylor Capozzo, Armada, softball
Capozzo powered Armada’s offense against St. Clair and Marysville to advance to the regional semifinals. The senior hit four home runs and had six RBIs in the district tournament.
Kiley Phelan, Macomb Dakota, softball
Macomb Dakota won its fifth district title in six seasons after defeating Anchor Bay, 7-5, on Saturday. The team also defeated Port Huron, 17-1, earlier in the day. Phelan led the way for Dakota with six hits and seven RBIs.
