An after-prom party in Hazel Park erupted in gun violence early Friday morning, leaving one person dead and another wounded, police said.
The incident happened at about 1:15 a.m. in the area of Powell and Orchard avenues near Interstate 75 and Nine Mile Road.
Officers arrived and saw a crowd fleeing from a home in the 23000 block of Powell, according to authorities.
Police found a man outside the house with a gunshot wound, they said. Officers also found a woman several houses south of the residence, investigators said.
Both victims were taken to a hospital, where the man was pronounced deceased, officials said. They said the male victim was a 20-year-old Detroit man, and the woman is a 19-year-old Pontiac resident. She suffered a non-life-threatening wound, detectives said.
They also said they believe that an “after prom” party was being held at the house when a dispute erupted, and individuals exchanged gunfire inside and outside of the home.
“Detectives are obtaining search warrants and investigating,” police said in a statement.
