TECUMSEH – Lillie Susewitz didn’t want to move up front.
Now, she doesn’t mind the move so much.
The freshman scored a key goal to help New Boston Huron’s girls soccer team advance to the finals of the Division 2 District at Tecumseh with a 4-0 victory over Airport on Tuesday, May 26.
“Lillie is only just there because we’re missing a couple of players,” Huron coach Matt Lividini said Susewitz, who normally plays in the midfield. “She’s a good all-around player with a lot of tenacity.”
Miley Skamiera delivered two goals and an assist to lead the offense. One of her goals came less than two minutes into the game.
“We’ve scored in the first minute so many times,” Lividini said. “We’re used to getting out of the gate fast.”
Ava Banko had the other goal for the Chiefs and Avery Turk was credited with an assist.
Huron is ranked 10th in the state.
“We knew we were facing a challenge going into the game,” Airport coach Nick Suarez said. “They have a very competitive, poised side.’
The Jets made the challenge even greater by giving up the early goal.
“We dug ourselves a hole, going down 3-0 at the half,” Suarez said. “But the ladies fought hard. I am proud of their effort. They showed a lot of grit.”
Airport finished 14-3-1 and placed second to Huron in the Huron League.
“That’s our best finish in Huron League history,” Suarez said. “It’s been fun We have six seniors. I appreciate all their effort.”
Huron moves into the District finals at 5 p.m. Friday to play Adrian, which beat Gibraltar Carlson 2-1 in Tuesday’s other semifinal.
TUESDAY’S TOP PERFORMERS
BASEBALL
Cam Fairchild, Dundee: Scattered four hits and didn’t allow an earned run during a 3-1 win over Ida in the District quarterfinals. Travyn Vajcner drove in two runs and Angelo Graves plated another with a sacrifice fly. Jack Foor led the offense with two hits. Owen Snyder pitched well for Ida.
Noah Banas, New Boston Huron: Racked up four hits and drove in four runs during a 13-0 victory over Airport in a District quarterfinal game. Cash Moczdlowsky tossed a five-inning no hitter with 10 strikeouts. Jakob Furkas, Jackson Surma and Owen DeLano also had multiple hits for Huron.
Mason Luzier, Whiteford: Tossed a strong game with Tre Eitniear picking up a save during a 2-0 win over Onsted. The Bobcats closed the regular season at 23-7 by droping the second game 7-5. Zayne Emch, Jake Scott and Sammy Miller had two hits each for the day.
Aaron Fowkes, SMCC: Finished with three hits and drove in three runs to lead a 9-3 win over Adrian. Jake Angove also had three hits and Brock Cousino two. SMCC also won the second game 10-4 behind two by Lukas Linzell.
SOFTBALL
Lily O’Dell, Ida: Went 4-for-4 from the No. 9 spot in the batting order to lead an 11-1, 11-5 sweep of Monroe. Amelia McCoy racked up three hits in the second game and Adisyn Swiderski and Emily Lambert added two each. Alexa Swiderski had a pair of hits in the first.
Aubrey Miller, Erie Mason: The freshman hit her first varsity home run during a 4-2 victory over Milan. Addie Homrich was the winning pitcher and Addy Oberhaus stole two bases.
Peyton Welch, Whiteford: Threw five no-hit innings during a 6-3 victory over Blissfield. Avy Wood singled in the fourth inning to break up a Blissfield no-hitter and scored the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Ava Stevens. Linny Scott delivered a key hit to make it a four-run inning and Ava Butz went 2-for-3 for the 18-10 Bobcats.
Ella Rath, Dundee: Drove in the only run for her team in a 13-1 loss to Tecumseh in a District quarterfinal game. Abby Marek doubled and Madison Cousino and Lydia Homrich also had hits.
Averie Gendron, Gibraltar Carlson: Recorded five hits in a split with Livonia Franklin. The Marauders won the opener 10-5 as Gendron, Emilee Konkus and winning pitcher Addison Skiller logged three hits each. Kennedy Warren went 3-for-4 in the second game.
GIRLS SOCCER
Heidi Cousino, SMCC: Played an exception game in net during a 2-0 loss to Lenawee Christian in the semifinals of the Division 4 District at Clinton. Nora Kinsey and Kylie Dubke led the defense. “I praise the effort and resilience of the team, highlighting strong performances from Quinn Harrington and Leah Genaw while expressing pride in how the group battled through adversity to the final whistle.”
TRACK AND FIELD
Julia Hughes, Ida: Won both hurdle races, including a school-record time of:44.9 in the low hurdles at the Larry Steeb Memorial Meet of Champions. Grace May set a school record of 9-6 while taking eighth in the pole vault, Addyson Wilt was fourth in the discus and Alyana Markey sixth in the shot-put.
