It’s considered the nation’s oldest continuously operating jazz club, so it’s no surprise Baker’s Keyboard Lounge will need to pause for updates now and then.
Management posted signage explaining that the nightclub and restaurant is currently closed for a few weeks for renovations.
The venue is getting some updates to the bathrooms, stage, bar area and patio.
“We plan on being open in June, reopening and celebrating going forth with 93 more years,” Jacquelyn Vaughn Whitaker told The Detroit News. Her husband is Eric Whitaker, who has co-owned Baker’s with Hugh William Smith since 2011.
She says the updates at the historic jazz club should take a few weeks.
“Our doors may be temporarily closed, but the music and legacy continue,” reads a sign outside, urging customers to scan a QR code to sign up for a mailing list for further updates. “Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to welcoming you back soon.”
Opened in 1934, the 99-seat venue — which is known for its piano-themed bar top and intimate setting — has hosted legends like Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, John Coltrane, Sarah Vaughn, Dave Brubeck, George Benson and Barbra Streisand.
