Wrong-way driver on U.S. 131 injures self, second man. What we know

Police say a 59-year-old man who was driving the wrong way on U.S. 131 in Grand Rapids caused a head-on crash on Friday, May 22, that injured both himself and another man.

The Michigan State Police Sixth District said the freeway in downtown Grand Rapids was closed for some time after the crash, which sent both the 59-year-old and a 24-year-old man to the hospital with lower extremity injuries. The 59-year-old was not wearing a seatbelt, police said.

The incident began when the older man, who was driving a silver Honda, sideswiped a pickup truck on northbound U.S. 131 near Hall Street.

The Honda fled, but the driver of the truck was able to get a photo of the vehicle’s license plate.

At about 6:51 a.m., the same Honda was northbound in the southbound lanes of U.S. 131, near Market Street and the S Curve when it struck a Ford sedan head on, police said.

Police did not identify any of the individuals involved.
