Tyrone Township extends medical marijuana, data center moratoriums

The Tyrone Township Board has again extended a medical marijuana moratorium — but this time, they said, is the last time.

The moratorium was initially passed with the intention of giving the Tyrone Township Planning Commission an opportunity to draft amendments to existing regulations, with a focus on grow operations’ impact on residents and zoning districts. The change wouldn’t permit recreational businesses.

Supervisor Greg Carnes previously said the task was assigned to commissioners about two-and-a-half years ago.

The moratorium expired in June 2025, but officials voted to extend the measure. They made the same decision in December, then in February. During a meeting May 19, officials voted to extend for another six months — but seemed to agree it would be the last time.

In December, Trustee Dean Haase questioned why ordinance amendments were taking so long, pointing out seven cancelled commission meetings during the fiscal year.

Trustee Zach Tucker, who also sits on the planning commission, said officials recently met with special counsel in both open and closed session — and have made what he believes will be the final changes to the draft.

“This (ordinance) is so close that I’m almost tempted to say we don’t need to extend (the moratorium),” Tucker said May 19. “But there’s no reason to risk any adverse impact … by not extending it.”

Trustees also voted to extend a data center moratorium. Tucker said the planning commission has a first draft of that zoning ordinance, but hasn’t finished a draft of the related regulatory ordinance.
