A Northville man is behind bars on a $1 million cash bond after allegedly going on an anti-Muslim rant at the Somerset Mall in Troy, where prosecutors say he made vulgar remarks about Islam to two Louis Vuitton employees, threatened them with violence and told them he had a gun in his car.
According to video of the incident reviewed by the Free Press, the man told one female employee: “Shut the (expletive) up wh— … You know how much money I spend in Louis Vuitton in the last couple of months, at least $200,000.”
He also is seen on video going off on a customer, telling him, “Your mom’s a wh—.” While the commotion is going on, two security guards are seen in the store, observing it all.
But the chaos didn’t end there.
According to authorities, after being escorted from the mall, the suspect shouted vulgarities at police officers in the parking lot, got arrested and taken to a local jail, where he allegedly exposed himself to corrections officers.
According to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office, the incident occurred on May 11, though it’s not clear in which store the incidents occurred. A police report mentions Saks Fifth Avenue and Louis Vuitton, the luxury French designer which has both a stand-alone store at Somerset, but also is sold at Saks Fifth Avenue.
Video of the incident appears to have been taken inside the Louis Vuitton store.
The defendant is 53-year-old Subi Saad, who was arraigned on Wednesday, May 13 with a hate crime, aggravated indecent exposure and disturbing the peace. An attorney of record is currently not listed in court records for Saad. He is scheduled to appear in court on May 21 for a probable cause conferance, during which a judge will decide whether there is enough evidence to send the case forward.
“No one should be harassed or threatened because of their religion,” Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said in announcing the charges. “This defendant allegedly targeted two patrons because they were Muslim and subjected numerous workers and shoppers to profane and sexual rantings. This behavior is never acceptable.”
A hate crime is punishable by two years in prison and/or a $5,000 fine. Aggravated Indecent Exposure is punishable by two years in prison and/or a $2,000 fine. Disturbing the Peace is a misdemeanor punishable by 90 days in jail and/or a $500 fine.
