Waymo to recall nearly 3,800 robotaxis over self-driving software issue

May 12 (Reuters) – Waymo is recalling 3,791 robotaxis in the U.S. over a self-driving software issue that could likely cause the vehicles to drive onto flooded roads, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Tuesday.

Here are some details:

• The recall pertains to certain fifth and sixth generation Automated Driving Systems (ADS) in robotaxis.

• The auto safety agency said that Waymo has modified the scope of operations to increase weather-related constraints and updated maps as an interim measure.

• A full remedy is currently under development, the agency said.

• Separately, Waymo is facing an NHTSA probe after one of its self-driving vehicles struck a child near an elementary school in Santa Monica, California, in January.

• Last month, the National Transportation Safety Board said it was investigating an incident in January in which Waymo self-driving vehicles passed a stopped school bus with its lights activated in violation of Texas state law.
