Almost 150,000 portable generators have been recalled for posing a serious fire hazard.
The Generac portable generators were sold at Home Depot, Lowe’s and other hardware stores around the United States and Canada.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warned the generators are at risk of leaking gasoline while being filled, creating a significant fire and burn risk.

Generac portable generators recalled for ‘risk of serious injury or death’
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Generac was recalling 149,400 Generac portable generators “due to risk of serious injury or death from burn and fire hazards.”
Another 260 of the generators were sold in Canada.
What’s wrong with the recalled Generac portable generators?
“When first filling the recalled generator with gasoline, fuel can leak from the carburetor, posing a risk of serious injury or death from fire or burn hazard,” the Consumer Product Safety Commission said.
“Consumers with generators that have previously been filled with enough gasoline to move the gauge off ‘E,’ or have been used without any gasoline leakage, can continue to be used.”

Generac and the unit type are located on the side panel of the generators.
The model and serial number are printed on a label attached to the side of the generator.

Has anyone been injured by the recalled Generac generators?
Generac has received 114 reports of generator fuel leaks. None of them involved any injuries.
Where were the recalled generators sold?
The generators were sold at Home Depot, Lowe’s and other home improvement and hardware stores across the United States from May 2025 through February 2026.
The cost ranged between $600 to $1,300.
What should I do if I have one of the recalled Generac portable generators?
“Immediately stop using the recalled Generac portable generator,” Generac said on its website.
“If your unit is included in the recall and has either not yet been filled with fuel or exhibited leakage after fueling … contact your dealer to arrange for free repair at the dealer’s location,” the Consumer Product Safety Commission said.
