EVANSVILLE – The 46th annual Evansville City Track & Field Meet was a historical one.
Athletes competed all night long. Diving to the ground after hard-fought runs, personal and competition records were set and student athletes from the six different Evansville schools cheered as loud as they could for their respective teammates. On top of that, the North boys won a sixth consecutive city meet.
But likely the most memorable takeaway from the event was the performance of the Mater Dei girls. For the first time in school history, they won the city meet with a score of 164.
And they did so in style.
Mater Dei girls track and field
The Wildcats won the meet by 34 points. Perhaps this was a shock to some given the recent success of North who had won the previous four city meets, but not to Mater Dei. After its first meet of the season, coach Roseann Wilson and her girls knew this team had something special to them.
“It’s an amazing feeling,” Wilson said. “Every event, every point, was something important and people came through. To win the city meet is very meaningful.”
What broadens that meaning for Wilson is the fact that she knows her coaching career is winding down. She has coached at top division one programs like Connecticut and Indiana, making her mark at each stop.
Wilson has been around a lot of track and field athletes, but this group has made a strong impression. She came into the night knowing her team had depth, but it is the girls’ ability to rally around each other that made the event’s outcome possible.
And the night ended with the proper statement. A Mater Dei school record of 4:04:82 was set by the 4×400 relay team of Harper Atherton, Ruth Dickason, Leah Heldman and Morgan Wannemuehler.
Like Wilson, Heldman and Wannemuehler knew the city meet could be theirs to win long before April 22.
“Definitely from our first meet against North and Memorial, we were like, ‘Oh, we can actually beat schools that big’,” Wannemuehler said.
“From the very first practice, everybody on our team got along,” Heldman said. “I just knew that with other people that had the same goals as me, that competition in practice would transform over to meets.”
Moving forward, Wilson and the Wildcats hope the performance reinforces their team identity. Keep working hard, keep working smart and stay healthy.
“We’ll try not to have any injuries, knock on wood,” Wilson said with a laugh.
North boys track and field
As far as the North boys’ success in the city meet, it is more of the same but the win cannot be overlooked. This is the standard put in place by Lonnie Wilson who is in his 12th year coaching the Huskies.
“It’s something we have built towards, trying to continue what we started six years ago,” Lonnie said. “Seniors stepped up, and so did underclassmen. We scored in a lot of different events and that’s what helped us.”
Lonnie said the success at North comes from the kids who put in the work and do what is asked of them. Nights like this show why they do it.
The Huskies’ top individual contributors at the city meet were Darian Walker and De’Amontey Layne. North’s 4×100 and 4×400 relay team also found success.
Lonnie credits his seniors, like Walker and Layne, for continuing to set the tone after falling short of a sectional title last season. With North now getting more production from its distance runners and field participants, Lonnie likes the balance his group possesses.
North will now work toward the conference meet with Jasper and Castle brought into the mix. Lonnie will make it a priority to have the kids prepared for what is to come moving forward.
“When you win one, there’s a bigger target on your back,” Lonnie said. “Our kids know that. You just got to step up and keep producing.”
