NEWPORT – Sean Sturgeon expanded his resume this spring.
Sturgeon, who has coached Flat Rock’s boys soccer team for the past seven years, took over the girls track and field team.
The Rams treated him to his first win by beating Jefferson 70-57 on Tuesday, April 21.
“Excited to pick up my first track win as a coach with a great group of girls,” said Sturgeon, whose squad had dropped its first two dual meets. “They earned it against a Jefferson team that we had not beaten in many years.”
Reagan Higdon did a lot of the work for Flat Rock. She won the 100, 200 and 400 meters and anchored the winning 800 relay.
Breanna Sexton (shot-put, discus) and Brinley Carney (hurdles) also were double winners. Madeleine Nowitzke took the long jump.
Jefferson’s Claire Miller doubled up in the 1,600 and 3,200 while teammates Randee Mulherin (800) and Elliah Byrd (high jump) won events.
Jefferson’s boys posted a 96-32 win as Zane Knezevich ruled the 100 and 200 and anchored the winning 400 and 800 relays.
“Knezevich has kind of put a chip on his shoulders as he tries to handle the workload as my senior sprinter,” Jefferson coach Josh Ludwick said. “He’s an unsung hero, anchoring two relays.”
Josh Hargraeves (400, long jump) and Logan Godlewski (throws) were double winners for the 3-0 Bears.
Mason Tulik provided a highlight for Jefferson fans, charging from well behind to nip Jacob Stanislawski of Flat Rock in the 1,600 meters.
“Mason is a kid who will always go for it,” Ludwick said. “If you give him a shot, he will go for the throat and win.”
The Bears also came out on top in the 800 with Orion Galloway, the low hurdles with Trey Oldenburg and the high jump with Maddex Shotwell.
Stanislawski (3,200) and Braylen Hoover (high hurdles) won events for Flat Rock.
TUESDAY’S TOP PERFORMERS
BOYS TRACK AND FIELD
Joseph Colaluca, Erie Mason: Finished first in the 400 and 800 meters and ran on the winning 1,600 and 3,200 relays during an 111-25 triumph over Morenci. David Sweeney (pole vault, long jump) and Lincoln Murbach (hurdles) were double winners.
Brendan Pease, Summerfield: Swept the hurdles and was part of the winning 1,600 relay during a 77-60 loss to Britton Deerfield. Colin Brown won the 800 and ran on two winning relays, JT Lemert swept the throws, Shaun Cowen took the 3,200 and ran on a winning relay and Austin Taylor was the pole vault winner.
Torran Simmons, Monroe: Swept the throws losses to Dexter 97-40 and Ann Arbor Huron 92-45. Gavin Rohr was first in the 800.
Sam Przytula, Gibraltar Carlson: Led a domination of the field events by sweeping the weight throws in a 68-60 victory Southgate Anderson. The Marauders also won the other three field events with Zachary Peterson (high jump), James Miller (pole vault) and Mason Love (long jump). Reece Wieckowski III took first in the 100 and 200 and ran on the winning 400 relay.
Marcos Reyna, New Boston Huron: Won the 400 meters and the long jump and ran on two winning relays to lead Huron to a 77-51 win over Riverview. Luke Dulecki won the three longest races of the day and ran a let on the winning 3,200 relay. The Chiefs also got field-event triumphs from Devin Huggins (high jump) and Cameron Crane (pole vault).
Ryan Thomas, Whiteford: Swept the hurdle races and the high jump as the Bobcats cruised past Sand Creek 104-33, Lenawee Christian 123-11 and Jackson Prep 95-41. Grant Rasor (800, 1600) recorded a pair victories while Nate Andrews (200), Brek Ruddy (pole vault) and Cole Griffith (long jump).
GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD
Abby Zilka, Summerfield: Won the high jump and both hurdle races during a 97-19 win over Britton Deerfield. Abby Raymond won the 100 and 200 meters and Alice VanCamp was first in the 400 and long jump. Each were part of a winning relay. Other wins came from Grace Raymond (800), Allison Ost (1,600), Makenzie Wolfe (3,200), Makenna Shipe (discus) and Sophia Stanger (pole vault).
Corinna Aulph, Monroe: Won the high jump in a season-best 4-10 during losses to Dexter 116-16, Ann Arbor Huron 78-40.
Lunden Davis, Gibraltar Carlson: Ran a personal-best :13.61 to win the 100 meters during a 75.5-51.5 loss to Southgate Anderson. Other Marauder winners were Madison Slade (800), Gaida Fioritto (1,600) and Brooke Postma (discus).
Rose Tillman, New Boston Huron: Leapt to victory in the high jump and long jump and was second in the 100 meters during an 80-48 triumph over Riverview. Falyn Doss was a double winner in the 800 and 1,600 while Cara Slovik won the discus and Sophia Guisgant the shot-put.
Brielle White, Whiteford: Earned victories in the 200 and 400 meters and ran on a winning relay in triumphs over Sand Creek (84-53), Lenawee Christian (108-18) and Jackson Prep (114-17). Other Whiteford winners were Briar Wing (800), Braelynn Chiotti (1,600), Breslin Wing (3,200), Kayla Luse (shot-put) and Nina Bauman (discus).
BASEBALL
Jack Foor, Dundee: Went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs in a 6-3 win over Blissfield. Winning pitcher Cam Fairchild helped his own cause by driving in two runs. Dundee dropped the second game 6-1. Angelo Graves drove in the run for the Vikings.
Owen Snyder, Ida: Scattered four hits in a complete-game 3-1 win over Clinton. “Owen was great today,” Ida coach Jimmy McMonagle said. The Blue Streaks got a single hit from seven different players and Grant Pfeiffer, Jacob Towne and Logan Theisen drove in runs for the 9-3 Blue Streaks.
SOFTBALL
Alexa Swiderski and Alex Haws, Ida: Had the only hits and scored the only runs for their team in a 7-2 loss to Clinton. The Blue Streaks did not have a hit in the first game, an 8-2 loss.
Madison Cousino, Dundee: Recorded three hits in each game of 10-9 and 10-5 losses to Blissfield. The first game went eight innings. Abby Marek also provided six hits, including five in the first game. Addison Cusac added five hits for the 0-11 Vikings.
Emilee Konkus, Gibraltar Carlson: Went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs during a 6-5 win over Southgate Anderson. Hayden England, Kiley Lewandowski and Addison Skinner notched two hits each to support winning pitcher Olivia Jamie.
BOYS GOLF
Levi Evans, Dundee: Shot 42 to lead the Vikings to a 178-188 win over Summerfield. Evans was supported by Harvey Richards (44), Cooper Salenbien (45) and Maximus Motylinski (47). Summerfield’s James Feudi was the medalist with 35.
Austin Tackett, Brayden Siders, Landon McGregor, Airport: All shot 40 in a 162-180 victory over New Boston Huron. Jack Newman led Huron with 42.
Colin Gilleran, Flat Rock: Shot a medalist round of 42 during a 173-200 win over Milan. The Rams took the top four spots with Ben Scully (43), Joel Scully (44) and Landon Higdon (44). Brody Cicotte and Sam Jesnness both shot 49 for Milan.
GIRLS TENNIS
Sarah Pente, Sklar Warren, Monica Steinmetz and Brooklyn Cowell, Gibraltar Carlson: Swept the singles during an 8-0 victory over Woodhaven. Doubles wins came from Morgan Wort-Maggie Samford, Gabby Peer-Riley Graham, Mena Sladich-Madelyn Mead and Sophia Gaynier-Molly Owen.
BOYS LACROSSE
Landyn Maly, Bedford: Scored three times, but the Mules fell 12-6 to Ann Arbor Pioneer for their first loss of the season. Jalen Porter recorded two goals and an assist and Kyle Burger added a goal and an assist.
