Top high school sports performers of the week in the Holland area

The spring season is underway. Despite the Michigan weather, several sports have begun.

Here is a look at the top performers of the week:

Ella Achterhof, Hamilton soccer

Achterhof scored both goals in a 2-1 win over Middleville on Tuesday, April 14.

Harley Brown, Zeeland West tennis

The No. 2 singles player defeated Hamilton’s Brynn Bolhuis 6-1, 7-5 in an OK Black showdown on Tuesday, April. 14.

Sophia Blauwkamp-Eran Meiste, Hamilton tennis

The Hawkeyes No. 1 doubles team defeated Zeeland West’s Samantha Edwards and Caroline Miller 7-5, 7-5 in a thrilling matchup on Tuesday, April 14. The duo also beat Zeeland East on Friday, April 17.

Will Nagelvoort, West Ottawa golf

The Panthers golfer shot a 3-under-par-69 to earn medalist honors at the Wooden Shoe Invitational on Tuesday, April 14. He finished his round with a birdie and an eagle to claim the individual title.

Andrew Legg, Holland golf

The Dutch senior shot a 1-over-par-73 to finish second at the Wooden Shoe Invitational after recording five birdies on April 14 at Macatawa Golf Club. The Dutch won the team title with a score of 317.

Linus Vandenberg, Holland Christian golf

The Maroons golfer fired a 2-over par round of 74 at the Wooden Shoe Invitational to finish third overall. He closed his round with two birdies in his last three holes. Vandenberg then shot a 36 to earn medalist in the first OK Black Conference jamboree on Thursday, April 16.

Izzy Delcalzo-Lucia VanKlompenberg, Holland Christian tennis

The No. 3 doubles team won a close match with Zeeland East, edging Kiana Samora and Raeleigh Jones 7-5, 7-5 on Tuesday, April 14. The Maroons won the match 8-0. The duo also went 2-1 at the Holland Christian quad on Saturday, April 18, helping the Maroons win the event. They beat Petoskey and Forest Hills Eastern with their only loss in a super tiebreaker to Parma Western.

Hudsen Hulst, Hamilton track

The Hawkeyes senior won the 110-meter hurdles (15.55) and the 300 hurdles (42.75) in a 78-59rivalry win over Holland Christian on Tuesday, April. 14.

Avery Engbers, Holland Christian track

The Maroons sophomore won the 1,600 meters in 5:55.65 and took third in the 800 meters to lead Holland Christian past Hamilton on Tuesday, April 14.

Gabe Lauer, Saugatuck track

The junior won both the 100 meters (11.48) and 200 meters (23.59) in his first high school meet. His times rank third and sixth all-time in school history, respectively, on Wednesday, April 15. Saugatuck beat Fennville 115.5–21.5 and Allegan 111–26.

Alina Martinson, Saugatuck track

The senior won the 100 (13.13), 400 (1:06.78) and 1,600 (5:34.38). Her 100 time ranks fifth in school history, and she now sits in the top 10 all-time in five events: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, and 1,600m. Saugatuck beat Fennville 111–21 and Allegan 92–43.

Ja’Hari Grant, Fennville volleyball

The junior put down nine kills against Kalamazoo Christian then powered 20 in an upset win over No. 4 Holland Christian on Thursday, April. 16.

Julie Miedema, Holland Christian soccer

Scored the game-winner over Zeeland East in a battle of state-ranked teams in Division 2 on Friday, April 17. Her free kick hit the crossbar, bounced straight up then came down and bounced into the goal.

Evie Price, West Ottawa tennis

The No. 1 singles player for the Panthers defeated Rockford’s Grace Ferry 6-2, 6-2 on Friday, April 17, to lead No. 4 West Ottawa past rival Rockford 7-2.

Austin Lee, Zeeland East track

The Chix junior won the pole vault at the Byron Center Bulldog Games on Saturday, April 18, with a lead of 14 feet, 6 inches. The height was his personal best and won the meet by six inches.

Adalyn Raab, Zeeland East track

The sophomore won the 1,600 meters (4:59.47) and finished second in the 800 (2:23.69) to lead the Chix to the team victory at the Byron Center Bulldog Games on Saturday, April. 18.

Charlie Sanders, West Ottawa track

The senior raced to the top 100 meters time in the state so far this season with a 10.63 in a dual meet against Grandville on April 15. He also won the 100 at the Rockford Rams Classic on Saturday, April 17, with a time of 11.05.

Collette Wierks, West Ottawa track

The junior won the 800 meters in 2:15.47 at the Rockford Rams Classic on Friday, April 17.

Clayton Ramsdell, Zeeland West track

The senior soared to a high jump of 6 feet, 5 inches, to win the title at the Rockford Rams Classic on Friday, April 17.
