5 fun things to do this weekend in Northern Michigan

It’s Valentine’s Day weekend, and there’s special events, fishing, hockey and more on the calendar.

Here’s what we recommend:

Hit the ice for Free Fishing Weekend

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ winter Free Fishing Weekend is set for Feb. 14-15.

During this special weekend, all fishing license fees are waived for the two days. A Recreation Passport is also not required to gain entry into state parks and boating access sites. All other fishing regulations still apply.

Emmet County Parks and Recreation, in partnership with the Northmen Anglers, will host its annual free Ice Fishing Day for Kids at Camp Pet-o-se-ga. The event is designed for kids in grades K-8 along with their parents/guardians. Fishing gear and bait are supplied.

If you plan to head out on the ice, be sure to follow the DNR’s safety rules and always exercise caution.

Enjoy a Winter Wonderland in Petoskey

Petoskey’s Winter Wonderland Weekend returns Feb. 13-15 with a full slate of fun, snowy events.

In downtown, there will be ice sculptures, live ice carving, crafts, carriage wagon rides, special sales and more all weekend long.

On Saturday, the Winter Sports Park will host the classic bumpjump race and Cardboard Challenge, along with other outdoor activities.

Show you support for girls’ hockey

The 5th Annual Katie Robinson Memorial Showcase will take place Feb. 13-15 in Sault Ste. Marie.

According to the tournament’s website, the showcase is “a celebration of girls’ hockey in Michigan, welcoming players and families for a weekend filled with fun both on and off the ice.” The tournament honors the spirit and legacy of Katie Robinson, and proceeds support the Katie Robinson Memorial Scholarship and the Diane Peppler Resource Center.

Twenty-one teams are set to compete this year. You can check out the schedule of games at katierobinsonshowcase.com.

See snowmobiles race in Gaylord

The Extreme Power Sports 300 is set for Feb. 14-15 in Gaylord.

The event, part of the Midwest International Racing Association’s schedule of races, features multiple classes of snowmobiles on an ice track, located at 988 Five Lakes Road.

Celebrate Valentine’s Day

There’s lots of ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day in Northern Michigan.

For example, you could choose to indulge in a Valentine’s Day Tea at the Inn at Bay Harbor, with tea times available Feb. 13-15. Or you could book a spot at Lavender Hill Farm’s Valentine’s Brunch on Feb. 15. You could even enjoy a special screening of “La La Land” at 7 p.m. on Feb. 14 at the Great Lakes Center for the Arts for just $5.
