The 51-year-old man, whose name was not provided, was transported to a local hospital and was later pronounced dead from smoke inhalation, according to a release from Lansing Director of Communications Scott Bean. Two other men, ages 49 and 33, were transported to the hospital with injuries. Their conditions were not provided.

In addition, one firefighter was transported to a local hospital for treatment of a “non-life-threatening medical check” and was later discharged, the release said.

Lansing firefighters were dispatched at 2:54 a.m. to the structure fire reported by a passerby who entered the 138 S. Clemens Ave. property and rescued two of the residents from the home, the city release said.

The initial 911 call indicated multiple people were trapped in the home.

Crews found “heavy fire conditions” when they arrived according to a release from the Lansing Professional Firefighters union.

Two people were found outside the home, and firefighters began a search of the residence “under extreme conditions,” finding a third victim.

“Lansing Firefighters extend our deepest sympathy to the family and loved ones affected by this heartbreaking loss,” the union said in a statement. “We are proud of the professionalism, bravery, and teamwork displayed by every crew operating on scene during an incredibly challenging and emotional incident.”

The fire incident is an open investigation and LFD personnel from the Fire Marshal Division are examining the scene, the release from the city said.

“The fire appears to have started in a second-floor bedroom located in the back of the house. The heavy fire conditions in the upstairs bedroom burned through the floor joists, creating large holes in the floor. Extensive structural damage to the building is slowing investigative efforts of LFD at this time,” the release said.
