These Broome County housing projects netted state funding for 2026. See list

Numerous Broome County housing projects have received state funding for new construction and renovations in 2026 and beyond.

Broome County projects secured significant commitments from New York state’s Regional Economic Development Council, with State Senator Lea Webb (D-Binghamton) highlighting this week that over $7 million was awarded to support projects in the region.

New York State Homes and Community Renewal also announced this week a round of funding that will impact housing in Broome County.

The REDC funding will be distributed through numerous state agency programs to promote economic growth, housing and region-specific strategic plans.

In a statement, Webb highlighted the importance of prioritizing housing in the Southern Tier and investments that meet the needs of the community.

“This funding represents a meaningful commitment to Broome County’s future by expanding housing opportunities, strengthening infrastructure, supporting local businesses, and promoting sustainable growth,” Webb said. “These REDC investments will revitalize neighborhoods and ensure our region remains a place where families can succeed for generations to come.”

Broome County REDC funding

$6,289,000 from the Pro-Housing Supply Funds Program: Will be used to create residential housing in Johnson City on 10.67 acres of land.

“Infrastructure components include site prep, demo, electric and other critical utilities, etc.,” reads the project description. “The future housing development will create 68 for-rent townhome units within two blocks of downtown. This project will further the goals of supplying quality housing to further the growth of industry in the Greater Binghamton area.”

$500,000 from the New York Main Street program: Will be used to renovate a 6,200 square foot, three-story building located at 121 Court Street in the City of Binghamton, which is aiming to build on its efforts to revitalize critical anchors and address vacancies. The residential units on the upper stories have been empty since the 1940s.

“The building’s rehabilitation will create jobs, commercial activity, and high-quality housing units for the area, attracting tenants who will add to the diversity as well as the economic and social growth of downtown Binghamton’s commercial district,” according to the project description.

According to the REDC, the building’s history and character will be preserved when possible throughout the construction process. A “thorough” interior restoration and exterior facade upgrades are planned. The new building will feature carbon-minimizing infrastructure, including high-efficiency electric appliances, water heaters, heat pumps, HVAC solutions, new insulation and LED lighting systems.

$200,700 to the City of Binghamton: To create a planning initiative which will highlight redevelopment priorities, encourage mixed-use development and enhance infrastructure for bikes and pedestrians.

$90,000 from the Climate Smart Communities Program: Will upgrade the 2015 comprehensive plan for the Town of Chenango. The new plan will include sustainability efforts, climate change adaptation, and a 10-20 year smart growth plan for the community.

Housing support for residents in Broome County

In addition, $9.2 million in funding from New York State Homes and Community Renewal Grant Programs to Broome, Cortland and Tompkins counties was announced on Jan. 21 to provide financial support for individuals, families, seniors and veterans to make essential upgrades.

The funding includes assistance for things like down payments for first-time homebuyers, rental assistance, complete emergency repairs, accessibility upgrades, and manufactured home replacement.

“These funds will support seniors who want to remain in their homes, veterans and families facing urgent repairs, and renters and first-time homebuyers working toward stability,” said Webb.
