FORT PIERCE — A stretch of U.S. 1 here is closed to all traffic after an early-morning drive-by shooting.
U.S. 1 in both directions between Avenue O and Avenue M has been closed since about 2:30 a.m. Thanksgiving morning, police said.
Police responded to the 1600 block of U.S. 1 after receiving reports of a car crash. They arrived to find the driver of the car had been shot. The car had veered off the road, crashed into a concrete power pole and was engulfed in flames, police said.
The shooter opened fire from another, unknown vehicle, police said, and drove off. The victim’s car had been southbound on U.S. 1, according to police.
Both the driver and a passenger escaped the car before the fire spread, police said. They were transported to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
Police have no information on a suspect.
U.S. 1 between Avenue O to Avenue M will remain closed for several hours while crews work to repair the power pole.
Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact police, 772-467-6800, Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers, 800-273-8477.
