Northbound lanes of U.S. 1 between Avenue O and Avenue M had been closed since about 2:30 a.m., police said, following a drive-by shooting.

Southbound lanes continued closed at 12:25 p.m.

Police said they responded to the 1600 block of U.S. 1 after receiving reports of a car crash. They arrived to find the driver of a Mercedes had been shot. The car had veered off the road, crashed into a concrete power pole and was engulfed in flames, police said.

The shooter opened fire from another, unknown vehicle, police said, and drove off. Both the victim and shooter were driving southbound on U.S. 1, according to police.

Both the driver and a passenger of the crashed car escaped before the fire spread, police said. They were transported to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Police have no information on a suspect, and the motive for the shooting is unknown.

Southbound lanes of U.S. 1 between Avenue O to Avenue M will remain closed until crews repair the power pole.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact police, 772-467-6800, Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers, 800-273-8477.
