A winter storm is expected to hit the Midwest in the coming days as millions of Americans travel for Thanksgiving, bringing the possibility of heavy snow and slick roads in Iowa from Black Friday through the weekend.
While Des Moines and much of Iowa are not forecast to see any significant snowfall on Thursday, Nov. 27, flurries are expected on Friday, Nov. 28, with officials at the National Weather Service forecasting more than half of the state could see snowfall of at least 4 inches or more by Sunday, Nov. 30.

The forecast for Thanksgiving Day in Des Moines is sunny but chilly, with a high of 35 degrees and light northwest winds, according to the National Weather Service. Nighttime will be mostly clear, with a low of around 17 degrees.
What is the forecast for Thanksgiving weekend in Iowa?
Friday starts mostly cloudy with a high of 30 degrees and a 20% chance of snow in the afternoon. The chance of precipitation increases to 80% Friday night with a low of 27 degrees.
Cloudy conditions will persist Saturday, with an 80% chance of snow and a low of 16 degrees. Sunday brings partly sunny weather, with a high of 21 degrees and lows around 4 degrees.
How much snow will Iowa get?
The National Weather Service projects “impactful” snow accumulation and the highest potential for travel impacts on late Friday through Saturday night.
Travelers across southern Iowa could also see snow mix with rain on Saturday.
The snow is expected to end Saturday night, although travelers may still be impacted on Sunday.
In Des Moines, there’s a 80% chance of receiving at least 4 inches of snow. Those odds are highest in northeast Iowa, with an area stretching from Mason City to Decorah and south through Monticello, where odds are 90% or greater. In Ames, the odds are 91%.
