It will be a week for nice sunsets, though not nearly as warm as this one near Lowake in August 2013. But as the weekend concludes, expect a change in the weather pattern with a cooldown in time for the area's lighted Christmas parades.

How's the weather for Thanksgiving, Black Friday around Abilene?

The good news is that weather this week should provoke no worries for the Big Country. The bad news? Winter is coming.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures for the most part will stay in the mid-60s to lower 70s. Lows will have started the week in the upper 30s and are forecast to rise to the mid 40s by Thanksgiving and the low 50s for Black Friday.

The week’s sunshine will give way to partly cloudy skies by Thursday evening. Friday’s cloud cover will insulate the Big Country from any lower temperature dips, though winds will pick up to 15 mph with gusts at 25. Rain chances will increase to 40 percent Friday night but should clear out by Saturday.

The weekend will begin with mostly sunshine and a high on Saturday around 68 degrees. A south-southwest wind will shift to the north by the afternoon, blowing at 10-15 mph with gusts again around 25.

Sunday will bring another chance of showers in the 20 percent range, rising to 30 by the evening. Highs are expected to be around 62 degrees with the low coming in at about 41.

Monday will see a 30 percent chance for showers with the 49-degree high barely above the previous evening’s low. That is in line with the forecast of a strong arctic air mass poised to descend into the continental United States. However with the arrival of the cold front several days out as of this writing, exact timing is difficult to predict.

Some commercial weather forecasters have the front arriving Saturday night with a hard freeze around 29 degrees, with the weather service trends to the warmer side and expects it to come closer to Monday. Either way, this week will be a good one for protecting any tender plants or wrapping vulnerable pipes against winter temperatures.
