While the San Francisco 49ers were able to secure a 20-9 win over the Carolina Panthers on Monday night at Levi’s Stadium, quarterback Brock Purdy had his worst game of the season.
The 25-year-old, who received a five-year, $265 million extension this past offseason, completed 71.9% of his passes for 193 yards and a touchdown. However, he also threw three interceptions in the first half.
This was just Purdy’s second game back from a toe injury that cost him the last six games and eight games on the year so far. On the year, he’s completed 68.7% of his passes for 979 yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions for a career-low 88.6 passer rating.
After the victory, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked about Purdy’s performance, but he didn’t seem too worried about it.
“He just had three throws he’d love to take back,” Shanahan said. “They were all three good decisions. He was just a hair late on them, and when you’re a hair late on stuff, you can’t throw behind them. He threw it behind them and all three guys made him pay.”
San Francisco went into halftime luckily clinging to a 10-3 lead, but Shanahan said he didn’t give Purdy a pump-up speech during the break..
“No. He was alright. I communicated with him throughout the game and at half time, but it was nothing big,” Shanahan said. “[QB coach Mick Lombardi] is deal with him throughout the game too. Brock was fine. It was just three throws he’d like to take back.”
Shanahan also said that he had no thoughts of putting Purdy on the bench in favor of Mac Jones.
Jones has started eight games for the 49ers this year, leading the team to a 5-3 record and completing 69.6% of his passes for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns and just six interceptions.
