Shalersville man indicted in alleged rape of pre-teen girl

A Shalersville man is accused of sexually abusing a girl over several years, starting when she was 11.

Charles L. Hamilton, 68, was scheduled for arraignment Nov. 25 in Portage County Common Pleas Court on charges in a grand jury indictment including first-degree felony rape and two counts each of third- and fourth-degree felony gross sexual imposition.

According to the indictment, the rape and third-degree felonies allegedly were committed between October 2019 and October 2021, when the girl was between ages 11 and 13. The fourth-degree felonies allegedly were committed in August and October 2022.

Hamilton was booked Nov. 22 into the Portage County Jail, according to a jail booking report.

A temporary protection order has been issued.

A jury trial currently is scheduled to begin Jan. 21. A status conference and pretrial hearing are scheduled for Dec. 30, and a pretrial hearing is scheduled for Jan. 15.
