St. Louis officials are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred at St. Louis Lambert International Airport on Friday, Nov. 21, and resulted in the death of a Peoria man, who authorities said was wielding a knife.
Police identified the deceased as Darius Kennedy, 31, whose last known address was on West Trewyn Avenue in Peoria.
At about 1:05 a.m. Friday, airport police officers encountered an adult male with a knife while they were conducting routine security checks in Terminal 1, according to police.
“The suspect refused to drop the weapon and was tased by one police officer,” police wrote in an email to USA TODAY. “The suspect continued to advance towards officers, and a second police officer fired his service weapon, striking the male suspect.”
St. Louis County Police Department Bureau of Crimes Against Persons detectives were contacted to take over the case. The officers involved in the incident have been with STL Airport Police for six months and one year, respectively. Both have prior law enforcement experience. Police said no officers were injured in this incident.
