Mimi Van Zanten scored a goal and assisted another to help lead Florida State soccer to a 3-1 Sweet 16 win over Georgetown on Sunday, Nov. 23 at Shaw Field in Washington, D.C.
The third-seeded Seminoles took a 1-0 first-half lead thanks to a goal from Van Zanten, her first of the season. She was the first to react to a ball that bounced around the Georgetown penalty box, and she stabbed home the goal in the 40th minute.

It gave the Seminoles the advantage in what was a very competitive first half. The Hoyas pressured FSU for the majority of the half, but before the Van Zanten goal, the Seminoles began to take control of the match back, ultimately resulting in the 1-0 lead at the break.
FSU scored its second goal of the game less than two minutes into the second half as Nyanya Touray found the top corner. The Seminoles had a corner kick cleared away to the feet of Touray, who wrapped her foot around a bouncing ball into the top left corner to score her second goal of the season.
Georgetown responded with a goal minutes later, as Mary Cochran scored in the 57th minute with an angled strike from outside the penalty box. The Hoyas rallied around the goal, but their pressure didn’t result in a goal, which allowed FSU to seal the game with Jadia McGrew’s goal in the 78th minute.
Van Zanten floated a ball into the penalty box, and McGrew outjumped a Hoya defender to score her first goal of the year and seal the Seminoles’ 3-1 win.
What’s next for FSU soccer? A return home for the Elite Eight
With top-seeded Notre Dame being upset by Ohio State in the second round, FSU will host its Elite Eight contest at home, against the Buckeyes, who beat No. 5 Baylor 2-1 in double overtime.
