CANTON TWP. — One of the township’s two Bob Evans restaurants has reportedly closed for good.
A sign on the door on Nov. 3 was addressed to “valued guests” and said, simply, “This restaurant has been closed. We would love to see you at one of our nearby locations.”
Bob Evans corporate officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the closed 41190 Ford Road location near Interstate 275.
At the other Canton Township location at 46080 Michigan Avenue, Manager Michelle Horn confirmed she was told the Ford Road location was closed and will not be reopening.
“They locked the doors yesterday,” Horn said, noting she did not have additional details.
Horn said all Canton-area Bob Evans restaurants are corporately owned, but said staff at the Michigan Avenue location were not given advance notice of the closure. “We don’t know exactly what’s going on,” she said.
The Ford Road Bob Evans first opened in 1979, becoming the fifth Bob Evans in Michigan at the time.
It once served roughly 6,000 customers a week, according to a 2003 Canton Observer story, and employed about 60 to 65 people.
The restaurant closed temporarily in January 2003 for a major reconstruction – the same year the Michigan Avenue location opened – reopening later with a new brick building and updated design.
It’s not clear whether the building will be repurposed. Bob Evans corporate officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
