New at the Mu: Titles and Claims Exhibition Features Championship Coaches
The Paul Brown Museum’s “Titles and Claims: Cultivating a Championship Program”exhibition features Tiger helmets, jerseys, trophies, team photos and coaches’ memorabilia. Located on the second floor of the Massillon Museum, it will continue through Jan. 18, 2026.
During the 134 years since Massillon Washington High School first fielded a football team, the Tigers have been recognized as state champions 25 times, most recently in 2023. Of 37 coaches who have led the Tigers, only 12 have taken the team to statewide recognition – Ralph Fugate, John Snavely, Dave Stewart, Paul Brown, Bud Houghton, Elwood Kammer, Chuck Mather, Tom Harp, Leo Strang, Earle Bruce, Bob Commings and Nate Moore. Three claimed national championship titles. Because of their leadership, strategic skills, innovations, and commitment to the team and the community, Massillon can call itself the “City of Champions.”
“Massillon Tiger football has a storied history,” said Logan Carr, curator of football heritage for the Paul Brown Museum. “As someone new to Massillon, to better orient myself with the legacy of the team, I chose to focus this exhibit on the coaches who have been instrumental in the development of this successful program.”
Carr will talk about the “Titles and Claims” exhibition at MassMu’s Brown Bag Lunch at 12:10 p.m. Oct. 28. The program is free and open to everyone with no reservations necessary.
The Paul Brown Museum also presents a dynamic timeline of Massillon Tiger football history from its inception in 1891 to the present, paralleled by the trajectory of Coach Paul Brown’s famed career. Photographs, artifacts and film illustrate key moments in Massillon Tiger football and Paul Brown history.
The Massillon Museum and the Paul Brown Museum are open 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday; and 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday. A visit is always free and everyone is welcome.
