Police make arrests following shooting near Battle Creek Central High School

 Battle Creek Police have made several arrests and recovered stolen property as part of an ongoing investigation into the Sept. 8 shooting near Battle Creek Central High School. 

Officers made several arrests on unrelated charges and recovered two stolen firearms and a stolen vehicle. Investigators are not seeking any additional persons of interest at this time, the police department said in a statement.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the Battle Creek Police Department at 269-781-0911 or report anonymously through Silent Observer at 269-964-3888. 

The police department said further information will not be provided at this time.

The Battle Creek Police Department and Battle Creek Public Schools initially released a joint statement, calling the Sept. 8, shooting near Battle Creek Central High School an “unacceptable incident.”

“While the incident was not school-related, its proximity to the high school is deeply concerning to both Battle Creek Public Schools and the Battle Creek Police Department,” the statement said.

Police responded to the incident north of the school about 3 p.m.

Officials said a verbal altercation occurred between a group of individuals in a vehicle and a 15-year-old and 16-year-old on foot.

“The individuals involved are known to each other, and the conflict originated outside of school. During the incident, an undetermined number of shots were fired,” according to the joint statement. “A student bystander was struck and sustained a non-life-threatening injury. The student was treated and released. No other injuries were reported.”
