SAULT STE. MARIE — Once a month, Sault residents come together under the light of the full moon to shop fresh food, browse local crafts and meet with their neighbors.
Fields Farm and Garden, 3290 E. 9 Mile Road in Sault Ste. Marie, hosts the special Full Moon Market. The tradition began three years ago with the idea of only holding a farmers market once a month and encouraging people to come together to shop at the market later in the day. They decided to host the market only on the night of a full moon.
Some vendors like the mother-daughter duo of Rochelle and Michelle Nelson have been coming to the Full Moon Market for years.
“This is our third year at the Full Moon Market and it has just kept on growing,” said Rochelle. “It’s amazing for families, people love being here.”
Rochelle works at a booth selling her homemade jewelry alongside her daughter, Michelle, who sells homemade treats. The two are from St. Ignace and make the trip to Chippewa County together once a month to take part in the market. They said always enjoy meeting new people, seeing the crowds and having the chance to expand their businesses.
The market includes everything from food trucks to greenhouses to live music and more. Patricia Scheffler, who runs P.S Gardens in Pickford, offers a wide variety of plants for both the home and garden.
Scheffler has been coming to the market since last year and said she has made a number of friends among the other vendors and shoppers.
“It’s really fun. It’s got a great atmosphere and I think people come to enjoy just hanging out at the market more than buying stuff,” said Scheffler.
Sunday, Sept. 7 was the third market of the season. One more is set to take place in October during the next full moon. More information can be found on the Fields Farm and Garden Facebook page.
