In New York, drivers can expect gas prices to average $3.15 per gallon, one cent lower than last year. AAA says Orlando will be the top U.S. destination, while New York City ranks sixth — meaning the state will see an influx of travelers.

AAA and INRIX warn of heavier-than-usual traffic, especially on the Long Island Expressway between New York City and the Hamptons around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25. Statewide, drivers should expect afternoon and evening congestion on Tuesday, Nov. 25, and Wednesday, Nov. 26, with additional delays likely Sunday, Nov. 30, and Monday, Dec. 1 as people head home.

“The Monday after a holiday is always a busy one at AAA,” said AAA Dispatch Manager Dan Fisher. “Many people relax over the long weekend, then encounter car trouble as they return to work or travel home.”

AAA recommends leaving early in the morning, packing an emergency kit, managing speed, driving safely, and minimizing distractions.

Frederick Douglass International Airport prepares for holiday crowds

At the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport, Director Andrew Moore says Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving will be especially busy, with 52 departures from Rochester on Tuesday, Nov. 25 alone.

While the airport will be fully staffed, travelers should expect longer security wait times. High traffic is also expected on Sunday, Nov. 30, and Monday, Dec. 1.

“We ask everyone to please be patient with our staff and to get here earlier, if possible,” Moore said.
