CHEBOYGAN — Last year, Cheboygan Area Public Library program director Paula Jewell and many working at the library were seeking an idea for their summer reading finale.
They wanted it to be fun and available to everyone in the community.
So, they came up with the Fantastic Foam Finale Party, which saw a huge turnout of kids and families during the inaugural event in Cheboygan last summer.
On Saturday, Aug. 9, the Cheboygan library again celebrated the community’s colorful summer of reading by hosting the second annual foam party at Washington Park.
For Jewell, the goal of making it a party-like atmosphere for kids was achieved as several youngsters throughout the area enjoyed themselves with plenty of foam all around.
“It’s a community event,” said Jewell. “You don’t have to participate in our summer reading program necessarily. We just want to open it up to everyone and get the library’s name out there so that even visitors that come to our area are welcome to the library, so it’s been great. Last year we had one cannon. This year it’s bigger and better with the cannons and added color for the ‘Color Our World’ (the summer reading theme).”
During the event, the library provided vouchers to kids for a free ice cream cone from Dairy Queen. Following the foam activities, the library conducted a grand prize drawing for their summer reading challenge participants.
“It’s incredible — we’re happy to see this,” Jewell said. “We’re super glad that people are taking advantage of a free, fun event in downtown Cheboygan.”
