A place of worship dating back to the 1880s has been voted the most beautiful church in Ionia County, according to our readers.
Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church was named the most beautiful church following a poll with nominations from Facebook’s “Wassup IONIA?”

The church — located at 434 High St. in Ionia — earned 54.35% of the vote. The original wooden frame church, named St. Peter’s, was dedicated on Nov. 1, 1863, according to the organization’s website.
The current building, described as Romanesque Revival, was dedicated on New Year’s Day 1882 and made of local sandstone and VanderHeyden brick, according to the website.
Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church is part of the Diocese of Grand Rapids. The church’s canonical administrator is Fr. Eugene Batungbacal.
Mass times are 4 p.m. Saturdays and 10 a.m. Sundays in English, and 12 p.m. Sundays in Spanish.
