Penfield assisted-living facility to close over ‘financial and operational challenges’

Legacy at Grande’ Vie, an assisted-living and memory-care facility in Penfield, will permanently close on or around Sept. 30, according to an announcement from Watermark Retirement Communities, which manages the site.

The closure, which affects about 110 residents and 80 employees, is being attributed to “ongoing financial and operational challenges,” according to a statement posted on Watermark’s website.

Support for residents and families underway

Watermark emphasized that the decision does not reflect on the quality of the facility’s staff:

“This decision is in no way a reflection on the exceptional associates and leadership at Grande’ Vie, whose dedication and compassion have remained unwavering,” the statement read.

The company said it is actively working to relocate residents to other senior living communities, including Legacy at Clover Blossom in Brighton and Legacy at Cranberry Landing in Irondequoit, both of which are also managed by Watermark.

Independent living residents given notice

In addition to assisted living and memory care, Legacy at Grande’ Vie also offers independent senior living. Residents in these units have been given 30-day notices, in accordance with their residency agreements, and will receive refunds for any prepaid rent.

All stakeholders notified

All residents, families, healthcare providers, and local officials — including the Long-Term Care Ombudsman — have been notified of the closure.

“Our team is working closely with each resident and family to ensure a smooth and respectful transition to other appropriate senior living communities,” Watermark said.

Future of the building uncertain

Watermark has not yet determined the future of the Grande’ Vie building, noting that the structure “requires significant investment.”

The facility is located at 2140 Five Mile Line Road in Penfield.
