The Battle Creek Police Department is investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that occurred early Monday, July 14, in the first block of Irving Park Drive.First responders from the BCPD, Battle Creek Fire Department, the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, and LifeCare Ambulance were dispatched to a reported rollover crash shortly after 1 a.m. Upon arrival, officers found a vehicle had rolled over and two injured passengers. Both occupants — an 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl, both from Battle Creek — were transported to a local hospital. Despite medical efforts, the man was pronounced dead. The girl remains hospitalized with serious injuries.Preliminary investigation indicates that the vehicle, driven by another 18-year-old Battle Creek man, lost control while performing reckless maneuvers in the park and parking lot. During the incident, the two passengers were hanging out of the vehicle’s windows and were ejected when it rolled, police said.The driver was not injured and was arrested and lodged at the Calhoun County Jail on charges of operating while intoxicated and reckless driving causing death and operating while intoxicated and reckless driving causing serious injury.
The crash remains under investigation by the Battle Creek Accident Reconstruction Team.
