ABC’s newest “Golden Bachelor,” who is from Michigan, says he doesn’t want to date anyone as old as him, according to a podcast interview that recently aired.
Mel Owens, 66, a linebacker for the University of Michigan from 1977 to 1980, earned All-Big Ten recognition before being drafted ninth overall in the 1981 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams.
The former NFL player turned lawyer, appeared on the the “In the Trenches” podcast,” and said his preference is to date women 45 to 60 years old.
“I said, ‘If they are 60 or over, I’m cutting them.’ They said, ‘Mel, this isn’t the Silver Bachelor, It’s the ‘Golden Bachelor.’ They’re going to be hot, don’t worry about it,'” he said in the interview.
Additionally, he said he wants a partner who is fit and stays in shape.
“I don’t think there will be artificial hips and wigs there. I know there are amazing women out there. Someone who’s a lifetime learner, who enjoys to love life, work out and stay fit, eat and have fun. Be energetic and live life,” he said.
Who is Mel Owens?
Before spending nine seasons in the NFL and then pivoting to a career in law, Owens played linebacker for the University of Michigan from 1977 to 1980.
Owens earned his juris doctorate from the University of California’s Hastings College of the Law and is now a partner at NBO Law in Orange County.
His legal practice primarily focuses on sports injuries, workers’ comp, and disability benefits, according to his law firm — areas close to home for a former athlete.

A premiere date for “Golden Bachelor” Season 2 will be “announced at a later date,” ABC says.
