A local theater troupe is bringing Sam Shepard’s play “Fool for Love” to the stage in Port Huron this June.
Teatro Di Vita will be performing at the Citadel, 609 Huron Ave., from June 6-8.
“Fool for Love” first premiered in 1983 and follows two former lovers who confront each other at a motel in the Mojave Desert.
“It is one of Sam Shepard’s only works that examines the intricacies of the male-female dynamic, specifically the fine line between love and hate, as well as romance and repulsion,” said Lucie Gillespie, who is producing the play. “Shepard also tackles themes such as jealousy, obsession, generational trauma, addiction and unresolved conflict.”
Gillespie said the play will give the audience a chance to reflect on their own ideas of love and romance, and their own relationships, both past and present. She said “Fool for Love” was her personal favorite play.
“I have studied it for half my life, and I’ve not yet had the opportunity to put it on and decided it was time to change that,” Gillespie said.
The play will be performed from 7 to 9 p.m. on June 6 and 7, and from 2 to 4 p.m. on June 8. Each performance will end with a discussion session about the play, allowing the audience to ask the actors questions.
Tickets can be bought online at https://www.teatrodivita.com/ for $25 per person before the show, or at the Citadel entrance for $30. The play includes adult language and themes, and is best suited for those 17 and older.
Teatro Di Vita was founded in 2022 by Gillespie to bring theater productions to the Blue Water area.
