Search for NMU student begins third day. Where Marquette police are looking

The search for 21-year-old Northern Michigan University student Trenton Massie entered its third day on Tuesday, Feb. 24, as efforts picked up again at 9 a.m., according to the Marquette Police Department.

Officers say Tuesday’s search will focus on Lake Superior, centering around the lower harbor near Founders Landing.

Police say they received reports Monday that led them to search in that area.

“Searchers with specialized equipment and training will be used,” officials said in a Facebook post.

Massey was seen at approximately 3:08 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, walking east on a bike path at the 7th Street Bridge on the west side of downtown.

Police say Massey may have been trying to walk to his residence on McMillan Street in Marquette when he was last seen on cameras, wearing a black and olive-green coat.

Police later said Massey was seen near East Baraga Avenue and the Founder’s Landing boardwalk, which is along the harbor.

“Massey appears to be disoriented and having difficulty walking,” police said of the video in a release.

Officers are asking anyone with information to contact the Marquette Police Department at (906) 228-0400.

Assisting with the search efforts are the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, Northern Michigan University Police Department, Alger County Sheriff’s Office, Marquette Fire Department, US Coast Guard Station Marquette, Michigan DNR Conservation Officers, Northern Michigan University President’s Office, numerous businesses and volunteers.

Kelly Grinnell, of Owosso, started a gofundme to support the family. As of 11:30 a.m. Feb. 24, the account had raised more than $17,000 of a requested $30,000.

“Sarah Brock and her family are facing every parent’s worst nightmare: her son, Trenton Massey, is missing in Marquette, Michigan,” Grinnell wrote. “The days since his disappearance have been filled with uncertainty, fear, and an overwhelming sense of helplessness. Sarah and her loved ones are doing everything they can to find Trenton, but the emotional and financial toll is immense.”
