MSU head coach Jonathan Smith provides injury report ahead of game vs. Youngstown State

Michigan State football had a few guys banged up in this last weekend’s win over Boston College, but appears to be overall in good health moving into week three.

Spartans head coach Jonathan Smith met with the media on Monday to recap Michigan State’s win over Boston College this past weekend and also look ahead to an upcoming matchup against Youngstown State. As part of his media availability, he talked about the overall health of the roster and one particular key player that’s been out.

According to a post on social media from Emmett Matasovsky of Spartan Shadows, Smith said the team is working to get “guys healthy” but there are currently no long term injuries for Michigan State. This is notable for the Spartans, who hopefully will be able to play a lot of different players this week against the Penguins.

Additionally, Smith touched on a possible return for starting safety Nikai Martinez — who has missed the first two games with an undisclosed injury. Per a social media post from Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press, Smith said Martinez is “closer than he’s ever been” to returning, and that “when he’s available and cleared to play, you’re gonna see him out there.”

It should be noted, though, that Smith and secondary coach Blue Adams made it sound like Martinez would be ready to play this past week against Boston College before it was later reported he’d miss the game late in the week. So, while this is another promising update, I personally would be surprised if we see him out there this week against Youngstown State.

Kickoff between Michigan State and Youngstown State is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
