Can I buy beer, wine spirits on Thanksgiving? What Michigan law says

If your relatives show up on Thanksgiving wondering where their favorite bottle of wine, beer or liquor is, you’re in luck: Michigan doesn’t restrict sales on the holiday, so you can run out to buy what you need before you sit down to eat.

Generally, any retail or on-premises alcohol sales location may open and operate on Thanksgiving as it would on any other day.

Thanksgiving is Thursday, Nov. 27, 2025.

When can you purchase alcohol on Thanksgiving in Michigan?

Licensed retail and on-premises businesses in Michigan are allowed to sell alcohol from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. There is no restriction on sales of alcoholic beverages on Thanksgiving.

Who can buy alcohol in Michigan?

State law restricts alcohol purchases to people who are 21 and older.

In addition, cashiers, clerks, bartenders, waiters and waitresses, and others are prohibited from selling to any visibly intoxicated patron regardless of age.

Will I be able to buy alcohol at Christmas?

Michigan closes alcohol sales at midnight on Christmas Eve and prohibits sales until noon on Christmas Day. The restriction applies to all licensees that sell alcoholic liquor for consumption on or off the licensed premises.

What are alcohol sales hours on New Year’s?

Locations that sell alcohol for on-premises consumption are allowed to remain in operation New Year’s Eve until 4 a.m. on Jan. 1. Patrons may consume alcohol until 4:30 a.m.

A person of legal age may bring up to 312 ounces of alcoholic liquor that contains less than 21% alcohol by volume — about 24 12-ounce containers of beer or 12 750-milliliter containers of wine — from another state without prior approval.
