Bay County police find crocodile sunning itself. What they did with the reptile

Police in Bay County got a toothy surprise Tuesday, Sept. 22, when a crocodile showed up in the yard of an area home.

The Hampton Township Public Safety Department caught a 3-foot South American crocodile in the 800 block of West Hampton Road, the department said in a Facebook post.

“There is no information at this time as to how the Croc got out into the wild,” the post said.

Police did not immediately respond to a voice message seeking additional information.

Hampton Township zoning regulations forbid keeping reptiles that are “not ordinarily of a domestic nature or naturally tame in their naturalenvironment.”

Officers were dispatched to the home about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in response to a report “for what appeared to be an Alligator in the front yard.”

When officers arrived, they found the crocodile under a crab apple tree.

The animal was captured and turned over to the Wilderness Trails Zoo in Birch Run.
