Algonac City Council takes care of business – Oct. 7

The Oct. 7 meeting of the Algonac City Council last just over an hour and all members of the council were present.

Trick of Treat Hours set in the city

Each year the city council sets the hours for Trick or Treating on Oct. 31 and it’s always from 5 to 7 p.m. In addition, there will be Halloween festivities held at Smith Recreation Park including a trunk or treat with cars lining up to pass out candy from 5 to 7 p.m. and an Algonac Fire Department bonfire at 7 p.m. The Algonac Rotary Club will give out free hot dogs and water with city employees doing the cooking. For the safety of participants, the city will be closing off Clay and Smith from Washington to Michigan and Michigan from Clay to Smith from 5 to 10 p.m.

City manager’s report to council

New furniture for the Algonac Swimming pool was approved by the Algonac City Council.

City Manager Denice Gerstenberg informed members of the city council that the Piece-to-Peace Quilters group would be moving into the new Algonac Activity Center on Oct. 8. She said there’s been lots of interest from other local groups related to the opening of the center. Road rehabilitation work on Elm and Chestnut streets plus North Avenue recently finished sealing the bridge and final punch work is being completed now. The Lions Park Pathway Paving Project, made possible by a grant, is 50% completed and some additional survey work needs to be completed.

Meter reading software renewed

A Neptune 360 Meter Reading Software Renewal in the amount of $3663 was approved by the council. The request was made by Water Department Superintendent Joshua Stewart who explained that the software is utilized to read all of the water meters in the city. The city currently has 1,870 meters. The one-year contract expires on Aug. 31, 2026.

Park Flagpole repair approved

A memo from DPW Foreman Joe Vernier asked the council to approve the cost to repair a flagpole at Riverfront Park. Vernier noted that for the large 20 x 30 flag in the park currently can’t be at full staff. The city has a contract with Rocket Enterprises for flag service and repair and got a quote for the work in the amount of $1,212.

Swimming pool deck furniture purchased

The council approved an invoice from Park and Pool in the amount of $34,985 to provide new furniture for the city’s pool. In addition to officials approving the bid from Park and Pool in April, in September the Algonac Lions Club announced a $15,000 donation towards the furniture. The council unanimously approved payment of the invoice at its recent meeting.

Library to host book sale

Mayor Pro Tem Dawn Davey used her time during council comments to remind people about the local Algonac/Clay library’s upcoming book sale. She said the sale will be on Wednesday, Oct. 8

and Thursday, Oct. 10 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Friday, Oct. 11 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Davey said the Friends of the Library Group utilize the funds from the book sale to do great things at the local library.

Costume table swap set

The upcoming Halloween in the Nac’ event set for Saturday, Oct. 18 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Smith Recreation Park will include a costume table. Mayor Rocky Gillis said organizers with Algonac Alive will host a table where visitors can donate costumes they no longer need and also take any costumes places there that they would like to take home.he added.
