LANSING TWP. — A community effort meant Robinson Memorial Church of God in Christ was able to provide nearly 50 Thanksgiving dinner boxes – with turkeys – to families in need.
Robinson Memorial Pastor Michael West said his goal was to help at least 10 families. The Lansing Township Police Department chaplain shared the effort with Police Chief John Joseph.
Joseph wanted the department and his officers to get involved and help the church located in the township, and the holiday spirit took hold. Canned goods and other donations started to come in from the police department, township employees, and church members. Then, the manager at Sam’s Club reached out to donate turkeys.
Groups like Punks with Lunch and the Tenant Resource Center also became involved and West said 46 families will have a proper Thanksgiving meal because of the joint effort.
“We put everything in a box that you would need for a dinner,” said Joseph, noting the church found the families that needed help.
The families picked up their meals at the church, 509 Charles St., on Nov. 25.
“We’re supposed to serve and protect, and serving is part of it,” Joseph said. “It feels good to be able to do something like that.”
West said one woman began crying upon receiving her Thanksgiving box.
He’s noticed more people in the community having food needs and is hoping the church and community can double its Thanksgiving efforts for Christmas.
