Michigan vs Maryland live updates: Week 13 game score, highlights

Michigan football leads Maryland, 42-13, on the back of a dominant running performance from RB Bryson Kuzdzal and a strong performance from QB Bryce Underwood.

Michigan comes into this game after a close call with Northwestern, pulling out a last-second 24-22 victory thanks to a walk-off field goal, but the Wolverines are still heavy favorites against a Terrapins team that has lost six straight.

With Ohio State looming next week, it would be easy for the Wolverines to let their sights turn to the Buckeyes next week, but coach Sherrone Moore rejected any notion of that this week, saying they are solely focused on Maryland.

“There’s nothing about this game that is a trap game,” Moore said. “There’s zero trap game on this. This is about a really good team that if you don’t play well, you will get beat. … And everybody knows what’s ahead, but we got to go execute. We got to go prepare for this one like our lives depend on it. It’s a playoff game for us in this building.”

Moore is not wrong. Michigan is not currently one of the 12 teams projected to be in the CFP playoffs.

The Wolverines will need to win out the rest of the way — beating both Maryland and Ohio State — to give themselves a true chance to be included.

It will begin without star Justice Haynes, however. The running back, who had 857 yards in 121 carries through seven games, had a screw and plate surgically placed in his right foot after the Michigan State game. Moore says that he doesn’t expect Haynes back in the regular season, but he may return for the playoffs if Michigan makes it that far.

Running back Jordan Marshall, who has taken on many of Haynes’ carries, suffered a shoulder injury against Northwestern, but may be back against Maryland. Moore expects him to be fully back by the time the Buckeyes come to town, but the Wolverines’ injury problems have become severe on both sides of the ball and destabilizing an already inconsistent team.

With Northwestern behind them, Michigan’s path forward is clear. It begins with the Terrapins.

Here are live updates, highlights and more from Michigan vs. Maryland:

Michigan football vs Maryland live updates

This section will be updated throughout the game.

Jalil Farooq gets touchdown with under six minutes left in game; Michigan leads Maryland, 45-20

4Q, 5:55: Maryland WR Jalil Farooq looked as though he had a touchdown, but having lost control of the ball and then recovering it, it necessitated a review. The officials confirmed that Farooq’s recovery of the ball counted for the touchdown. Michigan still leads Maryland, 45-20.

Michigan puts in Jadyn Davis, Zvada makes one to extend lead, 45-13

4Q,7:20: Three more incompletes for QB Malik Washington ended Maryland’s drive and forced the turnover on downs. Michigan backup QB Jadyn Davis is now in the game, along with Micah Ka’apana, who has been injured for most of the season. This one is pretty much over. K Dominic Zvada hit a field goal from 46 to extend lead. Michigan leads the Terrapins, 45-13.

Michigan extends lead, 42-13

4Q, 13:19: Michigan is moving into victory formation a bit early, putting in RB Jasper Parker as the leading rusher. He took 4 of 5 plays on this drive and rushed it six yards for the diving touchdown. Michigan extends lead to 42-13.

Michigan’s third sack of the game forces turnover on downs

3Q, 0:56: Michigan’s defense is in fine form right now. QB Malik Washington was working hard this drive, scrambling and making pass after pass to advance Maryland up the field. But ultimately, the drive stalled out after a rush of no gain from DeJuan Williams, an incomplete pass and the dagger: a sack of 14 yards from EDGE Derrick Moore. The Terrapins turned it over on downs at MICH49.

Kuzdzal’s third touchdown extends Michigan lead to 35-13

3Q, 4:09: Two penalties on the Terrapins helped Michigan keep the drive alive, escaping a 3rd and 9 situation early and a 3rd and 5 to put Michigan in the red zone. RB Bryson Kuzdzal thought he extended for a touchdown and upon official review, it was determined that he did in fact break the plane on his 1-yard rush. Michigan extends its lead over Maryland to 35-13.

Max Bredeson injured

BTN announced that TE Max Bredeson was injured in the first half and would not be returning to the game after halftime. He was spotted on the sidelines in crutches with a boot on his right foot. Michigan loses yet another receiver.

Michigan defense holds Maryland to field goal, leads 28-10

3Q, 7:34: Michigan nearly had a stop on the Terrapins on 3rd and 8 early in the drive, but a roughing the passer penalty on EDGE Cameron Brandt gave Maryland 15 yards and gave the Terrapins’ offense some much-needed oxygen. Maryland then got to work, with QB Malik Washington and WR Octavian Smith Jr. connecting on a 16-yard throw to get Maryland inside the ten-yard line. However, Michigan’s defense again came up strong, helped by an incomplete from Washington and a sack for a loss of six. The Terrapins settled for a field goal. Michigan leads Maryland, 28-13.

Bryson Kuzdzal gets his second of the day; Michigan leads Maryland, 28-10

3Q, 11:35: RB Bryson Kuzdzal’s breakout game continues as he rushed for 33 yards on this drive, including a 19-yard touchdown run. QB Bryce Underwood had some of his best completions of the day on this drive, with a deep pass of 21 yards to TE Marlin Klein on 2nd and 8. Michigan now leads Maryland 28-10.

Maryland unable to come up with any points

END 2Q: Despite a strong third down conversion, Maryland gained only three yards on the next three plays with two incompletions. Michigan received a 40 yard punt with 48 seconds to go in the half. The Wolverines were unable to do anything with it, though, and QB Bryce Underwood was sacked to end the half.

Zvada misses kick, score remains 21-10

2Q, 1:53: Michigan had another brief scare on the first play of this drive as RB Bryson Kuzdzal lost control of the ball; however, he was deemed down by contact. Kuzdzal’s strong game continued this drive, and despite QB Bryce Underwood taking a sack, he scrambled and continued the drive. Ultimately, after WR Andrew Marsh took a huge hit and lost the football on 3rd down, Michigan went for a field goal, but K Dominic Zvada kicked it wide right. Maryland takes it over on UMD28.

Maryland settles for field goal; Michigan 21, Maryland 10

2Q, 7:03: Maryland’s offense had made excellent progress downfield, but Michigan’s defense came up big near the end of the drive. LB Jaishawn Barham was crucial on 3rd and 4 in the red zone, sacking Malik Washington for just the fifth time this year. It was his 4th sack of the year — a nice moment for the former Terrapin. Maryland settled for a field goal. Michigan 21, Maryland 10.

Michigan doubles lead, 21-7

2Q, 12:28: It didn’t take long for the Wolverines to double their lead on the Terrapins. After a false start penalty on Blake Frazier set them back five yards, the Wolverines needed just three plays to cross the goal line. TE Zack Marshall got a first down and WR Donaven McCulley had an excellent run through traffic for 18 yards after a 22-yard throw from QB Bryce Underwood. Michigan leads Maryland, 21-7

Michigan gets interception

2Q, 13:37: Maryland’s offense was struggling to pick up momentum, and it was made worse when QB Malik Washington made the same mistake as Bryce Underwood on teh previous drive, overthrowing his receiver. Unlike Lavain Scruggs, DB Mason Curtis caught it and returned it for a few yards before he was taken down. Michigan takes over at the UMD23.

Michigan takes lead, 14-7

2Q, 14:17: Wolverines fans everywhere had a heart attack at the start of this drive when QB Bryce Underwood overthrew his pass and it was essentially intercepted. Luckily for Underwood, Lavain Scruggs dropped the ball and the drive was able to continue.

Underwood’s targets were much more distributed on this drive. WR Bryson Kuzdzal, WR Andrew Marsh, TE Max Bredeson and TE Marlin Klein all got touches on the ball. Kuzdzal eventually walked it in for the touchdown. Michigan leads, 14-7.

Maryland punts

1Q, 4:56: Michigan’s defense came up with a stop on the Terrapins despite an offside on LB Jaishawn Barham. WR Andrew Marsh returned the punt to MICH19.

Andrew Marsh ties it up; Michigan 7, Maryland 7

1Q, 7:05: Michigan crucially recovered an onside kick to begin the drive, receiving excellent field position due to LB Chase Taylor’s play. RB Bryson Kuzdzal stepped up in the absence of RBs Justice Haynes and Jordan Marshall, who is available but not the Wolverines’ preferred option at the moment after his injury against Northwestern. Kuzdzal had every single carry on the drive before WR Andrew Marsh caught the touchdown pass from QB Bryce Underwood. Michigan ties it up quickly, 7-7.

Maryland strikes first; Maryland 7, Michigan 0

1Q, 10:28: Maryland began the game with the ball and marched downfield.  A double flea-flicker was crucial to continue the Terrapins’ momentum downfield. QB Malik Washington hit TE Dorian Fleming for the touchdown, even with coverage from Michigan DB Brandyn Hillman. Maryland 7, Michigan 0.

Jeff Seidel predicts

I suppose the only danger, this week, is Michigan looking past Maryland. But I doubt that will happen. The Wolverines should have two goals this week: Get out of Maryland healthy and start preparing for Ohio State on the flight home. Then we can all turn our attention to the game that will define Michigan’s season. The pick: U-M 31, Maryland 10.

Andrew Marsh poised to lead offense

WR Andrew Marsh was already having a breakout year. But with injuries to Michigan’s leading running backs, he’s likely to get even more carries as the team adjusts its offense to compensate. He’s more than ready for the opportunity.

Marsh broke onto the scene with a career day against Wisconsin: four grabs for 80 yards in a 24-10 win.

“He just continued to make plays, kinda like he was doing in fall camp but did it more consistently,” Michigan coach Sherrone Moore said in mid-October of how he earned the job. “He aligned exactly in the right place, knew where to go, was able to make those competitive plays through the bye week and has obviously done that as we’ve gone through these past couple games. So he’ll continue to get the chance to do that.”

Carlos Monarrez predicts

Michigan is 11-1 in this series and is about to cruise to 12-1 against the Terrapins, who are riding a six-game losing streak and haven’t won since they beat Wisconsin on Sept. 20. Maryland’s only hope is that the Wolverines get caught looking ahead to their showdown with Ohio State. But that’s not likely to happen after Michigan got a wake-up call in its narrow win over Northwestern. The pick: U-M 31, Maryland 10.

Michigan gets back LB Cole Sullivan, who has not played since Michigan State, but loses kick returner Joe Taylor, WR Semaj Morgan and LB Ernest Hausmann.

Michigan’s defense is finding “true character”

There were qualms and questions about Michigan football’s defense just a month ago.

The Wolverines left sunny Southern California in mid-October with a cloudy outlook after USC gashed and gutted U-M’s normally stout resistance for nearly 500 total yards – 224 on the ground and 265 in the air. There were missed tackles, poor angles, bad communication and, in general, a sloppiness from the unit unseen in years.

The answers since have been resounding.

Over the Wolverines’ past four games combined, the defense has allowed just 65 points. That’s including a final minute touchdown from Michigan State with the game already in hand and another touchdown against Northwestern on Saturday when the unit started on its own 6 after an interception return.

“It’s one of those things you find out the true character of who you’re coaching and who you’re coaching with,” he said Wednesday, Nov. 19 ahead of U-M’s matchup with Maryland. “I love the staff that we have here and the trust that we have in each other. And, you know, you just got to go back to work.”

Tony Garcia’s prediction

These teams are led by two young quarterbacks with big arms and big frames. That’s about where the similarities end. U-M’s defense has been suffocating, while Maryland has relied on turnovers to stay in games. Michigan cannot look toward OSU too early – even in CFP seasons in 2022 and 2023, Maryland played U-M tight in the lead up to “The Game,” staying inside a touchdown each time. It won’t be quite that close this time, but will be closer than most expect. The pick: Michigan 30, Maryland 19.
