3 unique installations in Michigan make list of must-sees for art lovers

A national survey named three art displays in Michigan among the most unique in the country.

The survey “Top 126 Coolest Art installations in the U.S.” was conducted by Rivers Art, an art printing provider, and asked art enthusiasts around the country which obscure public art displays they wanted to visit most this year.

Hamtramck Disneyland

Hamtramck Disneyland placed No. 21 on the list. The whimsical installation of colorful sculptures is positioned between two equally colorful houses in a not-so-colorful neighborhood. Ukrainian immigrant Dmytro Szylak spent 20 years on the outdoor installation before he died in 2015. The eclectic display of sculpted spaceships and towers is now maintained by a local art gallery.

ArtPath

Lansing’s ArtPath was listed at No. 70. The riverwalk display of sculptures, murals and interactive art has been a Lansing tradition since 2018, according to the Lansing State Journal. This year, the trail has 20 works of art.

cARTier Trail

Ludington’s “cARTier Trail” made the list at No. 115. The Ludington Area Center for the Arts says the year-round installation features local artwork in 3-foot-by 4-foot frames along Cartier Trail. Three new pieces were installed this year.

Here are the top-10 exhibits from the survey:

In a release, Tony Gilbert, the CEO of the Rivers Art, said that survey participants seemed to choose art installations that were intimate and unique.

“These aren’t just photo ops. They’re markers of memory, community, and imagination,” Gilbert said. “And in many cases, they say more about who we are than the famous landmarks ever could.”
