Worship Him

By Allen Domelle, Old Paths Journal

Revelation 14:7

“Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.”

The word “worship” has been so misused by believers. Preachers often say in a morning church service that they have come to “worship God.” To some extent of the word, certainly going to church is worshipping God, but to the true meaning of the word, it is only a small portion of what it means to worship God. Many feel that worshipping God is having a warm fuzzy feeling when they are singing a song, which is the furthest from the truth. The Scriptures show several things that define worshipping God that I would like to point out to you.

First, worshipping God is keeping your focus right. The verse above says, “worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.” This verse is insinuating that you can worship someone else other than God. God defined plainly that He alone is to be worshipped. Every time you keep your focus on God, you are worshipping Him.

Second, worshipping is keeping God first in your life. Exodus 34:14 says, “For thou shalt worship no other god…” Anything that comes before God in your life becomes a god. Sadly, many worship sports on Sunday when they should be in church. Likewise, many worship money instead of God when they take their tithes and use it for themselves. If you want to be faithful to worship God, you must make sure that you set nothing before Him.

Third, worshipping God is living a holy life. 1 Chronicles 16:29 says, “…worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.” In other words, you worship God when you choose to live right. Worshipping God is being separate from the world. Worshipping God is making sure you don’t see the wrong things. Worshipping God is loving your spouse and obeying your parents. Worshipping God is paying your bills on time and working hard on the job. Worshipping God is doing right when nobody else is around. You must understand that every time you choose to do right, you are worshipping God in the manner that He wants to be worshipped.

Fourth, worshipping God is spending time at the feet of Jesus in prayer. Mary worshiped God when she sat at the feet of Jesus to talk to Him and to hear Him speak to her. My friend, most of your worship time with God will come when you are alone in the prayer closet talking to Him in prayer. It is hard to worship God in holiness if you don’t spend time worshipping Him by walking with Him in the Scriptures and spending time at His feet in prayer. You will find it much easier to worship God by living a holy life if you spend time alone with Him in the Scriptures and prayer.

Fifth, worshipping God is serving Him. Jesus said in Matthew 4:10, “Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.” Serving God is worshipping Him. You are worshipping God when you get busy serving Him by telling others about Jesu and serving in the church. Some of the greatest worshippers are those who clean the restrooms in the church or those that do the behind-the-scenes work that nobody sees. If you truly want to worship God, get busy serving Him in your church. No, this doesn’t give you the warm feeling you get when you sing, but it does please God that you are willing to worship Him in service.
