Unplanned: An eye-opening feature film

“Editor’s Note: the following article includes a graphic description of abortion that may be unsuitable for some readers.”

My eyes were welling up with tears as I watched the new movie “Unplanned”, which was released in 1029 theaters around the country on March 30. “Unplanned”, a product of Pure Flix was based on a true story of the life of Abby Johnson. Abby, a Texas A & M graduate, who started down a trail that turned into a slippery slope which almost destroyed her life. No one ever plans to become a drug addict, alcoholic, or in Abby’s case a clinic director for Planned Parenthood. Under her leadership, the clinic was responsible for performing 22,000 abortions including having 2 abortions herself.

It all began when she wanted to become popular, fit in, and become attractive to men. She began to let her morals slip and that led to a life out of control. “God never created us to be popular,” Abby told a group of college students.” To follow His path, we may be lonely at times.” It was in the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve were deceived into going against God’s plan and decided they wanted to determine their own rules and disregard God’s. Many young people “lose their soul” when they begin to believe the lies of our society. Abby was no exception. It began with the loosening of her moral conviction, then in her value of human life leading to her first abortion.

The hearts of these people have grown callous, their ears are hard of hearing, and they have shut their eyes; otherwise, they might see with their eyes and hear with their ears, understand with their heart, and be converted, and I would heal them. (Acts 28:27)

She finally became so hard-hearted she supervised those 22,000 abortions. “I was so blinded, I truly believed that I was helping those young women,” she lamented.

Then one day she had her eyes opened. The movie depicts her helping to perform an ultrasound-guided abortion. She had been under the impression that babies were unable to feel the pain during this procedure. “The fetus is moving away from the suction tube,” she told the doctor. “They always do,” replied the doctor. At that moment she saw with her own eyes just what happened during an abortion, human life was violently being destroyed.

This eye-opening experience led her to leave her job and set up her own foundation that seeks to abolish the practice of abortion and help workers leave the abortion industry.

Last year, it is reported that the leading cause of death in our world was not war, or disease but abortion. Forty-two million lives were destroyed by the plague of abortion in 2018. My eyes were filled with tears as I thought of the pain and guilt that must have filled Abby’s life. “Unplanned” is not a political film but a raw, painful, personal account of a precious young woman who had her eyes opened to the truth.

This film will open the eyes of many people if they will just go and see it. The acting, screenwriting, and production were all well done. The “R” rating is likely due to the bloody botched abortion scene. Sensitive younger children should not see the movie.

This movie has the potential to cause a change in beliefs, behavior, voting at the ballot box and the future of our nation. The first two weeks in theaters the movie has doubled expectations at the box office. Go see this important movie and determine for yourself if “Unplanned” doesn’t change your view of this controversial subject.

My takeaways from “Unplanned”

  1. We need to pray for the people, not accuse them.
  2. We need to reach out and help those who have unplanned pregnancies.
  3. We need to elect public officials that are Pro-life.
  4. We need to live our lives so that others will listen to our words.

Lord, we need you to open our eyes to the truth

2 Chronicles 7:14
If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
